Working in New Zealand
To work in New Zealand, first of all, someone must have a legal permit to enter New Zealand. This can be achieved by having New Zealand passport, New Zealand Permanent Residence, Work Permit/Visa, Working Holiday Visa, Trainee Visa, etc.
Part Time Job
This kind of job is a casual job and usually it is not more than 30 hours/week. Domestic and international students commonly take this job (foreign students is entitled to work maximum 20 hrs/week Some people take part time job as they have another activity (growing kids, family business) or even limited by age (elderly).
Its availability and flexibility enable students to work while study. This job is useful for those willing to get working experience or even to earn their living cost.
Part time job is commonly available in retail industry (apparel-fashion-fast food-café shop-supermarket-electronics-pharmacy), restaurant, hotel, attractions, cleaning service. Office job is sometimes available.
Casual Job
Short term job which normally not more than 6 months. This is only to fill in vacant position caused by annual leave, summer/Christmas season, lack of staff.
Full Time Job
This has at least 37hrs/week.Staff are entitled to have 4 weeks annual leave after completing 1 year.
Getting a job in New Zealand is not as easy as we assume. The question such as “Do you have New Zealand experience ?” is a great barrier for new comers in New Zealand or for fresh graduates who never take part time job/casual job.
It needs patience, technical skills as well as personal skills. Sometimes people must start with lowest level and do something they do not like to do.
Today the minimum wages is $NZ 12.50/hr (gross).

- Browsing internet, job fair, local and national newspapers.
- Voluntary job.
- Making relationship.
- For casual job application should be dropped long before holiday season.
- Through agency Get work visa, Permanent Residence if we do not have permit to work.
